Decenter Work: Why Your Work Shouldn’t Define Your Identity | Episode #8
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Many high-achieving Black women have built incredible careers, but somewhere along the way, work quietly became the center of their identity.
In this episode of Fulfilled with Isimemen, I challenge a mindset many ambitious Black women fall into: allowing work performance, titles, and feedback to determine their sense of worth.
While meaningful work can absolutely be part of a fulfilling life, it should never have the power to define who you are. When work becomes the primary source of identity, stress rises, joy disappears, and every setback begins to feel personal.
Decentering work is not about caring less about excellence, it’s about reclaiming perspective. Work is one part of a rich life that also includes relationships, faith, health, joy, and purpose beyond the office.
Instead of obsessing over workplace dynamics or internalizing every challenge, you begin to see work for what it truly is—an opportunity to grow your skills, sharpen your gifts, and expand your impact.
And when your identity is rooted in something deeper, the ups and downs of your career stop defining your value.
This episode explores how shifting your mindset about work can dramatically change your peace, your confidence, and the way you show up professionally.
